2007 GAP Ski Instructor Course Review
 |
Alan Walters, 41 - IT Project Manager
I selected the Warren Smith Ski Academy GAP course as they were the only provider that could answer all your questions and were not just coordinating a group of separate companies to attempt to provide a similar package. |
When I started I could get down most things without any issues, and without style some would say, but I was crap at moguls and off piste!
The days started with food then a roll about in the snow for a warm up then ski technique for a few hours, then grab some food, then ski for the afternoon, then grab some food, drink, do our homework and then get stuck into some video analysis, oh and then food again!
| It was obvious the coaches loved what they were doing and were very enthusiastic especially Phil with his ski Sunday playing during warm-up. In fact there were times they didn't need us there. They would entertain themselves :o) |
|
Some exaples of the the ski technique we worked on would be thigh steering, pole plants, inside leg steering and standing a little taller on the skis.
The Avalanche Awareness course was quite an eye opener, and highly recommended.
 |
On the course there were all ages from teens to 50s, from all walks of life, and some very different personalities which all made for a good laugh. Towards the end though there was a tiny bit of cabin fever from some, but in the end we are all still very good friends! |
It was a bit of an eye opener in terms of what was actually required and the level of understanding you needed to ‘help' people. As for the work experience, We all have sooooo many stories to tell. It was, in many ways, entertainment just listening to the others. Have a go and you'll understand.
The ski instructor qualification will be used used part-time or when I win the lottery or Premium Bonds :o) |
|
There is a big difference difference in my skiing now than before. It is considerably better now! Even with a little style :o)
 |
Well with the little time that was left over from the course there was time to chill out a little and enjoy the resort for what it was. Verbier is a great place to be with venues for every type of evening to be found… Lots of people dressing up for Mardi Gras night, and the following day as they hadn't made it home… |
The tuition on the course is full on. If you think you've got something sussed, you will just be taken on to more difficult terrain to ensure that you know what to do. Now I am confortably and confidently doing loads of off piste and loads of things I would never normally do and will certailnly never be covered by your bog standard insurance coverage! :o)
