Thursday 17th May was a slightly easier day on the on the Dallaglio Flintoff Cycle Slam 2012 (http://www.dallaglioflintoff2012.com) with 120km’s to ride and a little less headwind. We were however hitting the famous Roubaix cobbles!
He had another early 7am start from Saint Quentin and today Lawrence and Bonzo where on the tandem so Sam Branson was put in charge as team captain. It was an eventful start for our team with Paul Merrigan almost getting hit by a lorry in the first 10 minutes (I was right behind him, it was so close!) and then a few minutes after someone pulled the brakes too quick in front of him without warming (you’re supposed to shout ‘Stopping’) leaving Paul to emergency brake and perform a triple front flip over hit handle bars landing on his feet! He also managed to blow his front tire out so it was a bit of delay. Paul was alright which was the main thing. Luck of the Irish I reckon and incredible skills!
We motored through the day with some help from cycling pro and Roubaix specialist Roger Hammond. By the time we hit the Roubaix cobbles we had a little knowledge but as I think most riders would agree, we were a million miles away from the high speed attack of the cobbles in the way it’s supposed to be done.
We finished in Roubaix at the famous velodrome stadium around 2pm where we got in a couple of laps then boiling hot showers, literally boiling. Bus equipped with Bollinger Champagne to Lille station then Eurostar into Ashford, UK, for a night kindly hosted by Pizza Express. Ready for the last day of the last stage! Bring on Olympic Park!
