ABOUT the Lab

We created the Technique Lab as a way skiers can train specific movements, ranges and muscles when not skiing and in a non-ski environment.

This is something that can be used all year round and is not reliant on snow or artificial ski slopes. By using these simple tests and exercises you can help maximise your body’s potential when you next get back on snow. You’ll also learn your physiological strengths and weaknesses which will empower you when you next get out on the snow and help when buying new ski equipment.

When you perform any of the tests or exercises try and be as accurate and honest with your scores and feelings as possible. They’re purely there to help you self-train and improve your own flexibility, mobility and ski-specific strength and stability. The aim is to understand how your body moves, develop your scores and strengthen weaker areas over time.

Main Benefits

Understanding

Begin to understand what your body is and isn’t capable of. Where you need to focus your attention for physiological development. How these movement patterns and ranges affect your performance and ability when skiing.

Mobility & Flexibility

Learn to mobilise your body and improve your flexibility in certain ranges that are very specific to skiing. When you have to do so on snow the movement will be easier to find and develop.

Strength & Stability

Develop strength and stability in some key areas of your body that are essential for effective, accurate, skilful skiing. Understand which muscle groups are essential for skiing. Greatly reduce the risk of injury.

Equipment knowledge

Learn how your ski equipment can aid or hinder your body’s functional ability to move when skiing. This knowledge will help when choosing and buying new ski equipment and discussing your needs with professionals.

Ski biomechanics & range tests

Ankle Flex Range
Improper flex of the ankle will force a skier to compensate with other points of the body. Usually, over flexing at the knee. Either due to a lack of mobility, strength, technical awareness or sub optimal equipment. Are any of these factors holding you back?
Skier symmetry
Learn to activate the muscles controlling adduction and abduction in the legs, essential to maintaining a functional stance. Without the ability to control the inside and outside leg a skier will struggle to maintain control of the skis. Are you in control?
Leg steering range
Many skiers use the upper body to affect a change in direction of their skis, this is wrong. The most effective way to create a steering of the skis is by using our legs independently of the upper body. Do you have the range to unleash your skiing potential?
Dynamic Flexion & Extension
How and when we flex our legs whilst skiing massively influences our ability to ski well and effectively. Do you have the correct patterns and strength to maintain good alignment through this movement range? Do you know when to apply these movements in your skiing?
Improve Leg Lean
Without leaning the skis cannot do their job. With too much leaning the ski may not be able to keep you from falling over. A sufficient range of movement to be able to separate the upper and lower body at the hips is essential to achieving great skiing. How’s yours?
Core stability
Being strong in this area of the body will enable you to withstand the stresses and strains that skiing puts on the body, whilst greatly improving your chances of avoiding certain injuries and ensuring your body can function to allow great skiing. How stable is yours?

Chiropractor
Craig McLean
Dr Craig McLean graduated as a Chiropractor in 1994 and took over Putney Chiropractic Centre (est. 1986), London in 2002. Since arriving in the UK from his native Australia, Craig has been working with the Warren Smith Ski Academy on a consultancy basis, helping the academy clients unlock blocked ranges of movement that biomechanically restrict developments taking place in their skiing technique. Most skiers hit a plateau in their skiing ability because of anatomical joint restriction, muscle weakness or poor neurological input. In other words stiffness in the spine or the lower extremity joints creates functional nerve and muscle problems and can result in a physical inability to steer the legs without using the hips, laterally control the leg stance and achieve a natural weight distribution on both skis. Warren and his Academy team also use Craig’s skills to help optimise their performance when pushing their skiing to the limit. High performance skiing puts a great demand on the body that can result in the creation of a mis-alignment in the spine or pelvis or both. This may result in decreased power in one side of the body that will effect performance and make the skier vulnerable to injury. During a winter season Craig continually monitors the team’s physical strength and condition through chiropractic, orthopaedic and neurological testing and correcting problems using specific chiropractic adjustments.

After a while she was able to re enter the world and found herself back in the industry. She had the opportunity some years ago to set up her own business specialising in making custom orthotics, A Step at a Time. Alex now does this alongside a thriving winter business where she sees her own customer base for ski related insoles and boot modifications as well as everyday orthotics. We’ve been fortunate to have a relationship Alex for some years now and Alex has been working on Warren’s boots and insoles for all that time too. Alex additionally, works alongside various brands promoting and looking after their athletes and can be found with Sidas delivering training to shops, and at any given time is emerged in various ski shops across the UK in the winter. Both delivering training expertise as well as at the coal face fitting ski boots. Alex will be found at various events with the Warren Smith Ski Academy promoting our important message around ski movement and biomechanics. She can apply her experience and expertise to some of the trickiest scenarios and likes to think she’s able to empathise and affect change

Off Snow program

The Academy Off-snow program gives skiers an insight into overall ski fitness covering four main topics:

Essential Pre Ski Warm Up
Ski Physiology + Biomechanics
Ski Specific Dry Land Training
After Ski Cool Down + Stretch
Dry Land Training Programme
It’s an aim of many people to improve their skiing technique, whether for practical use of being able to ski faster, steeper and for longer or for the feeling of just being a better skier in the crowd you ski with. Either way, people are always striving to develop their ski technique. The main problem people face with this is getting the opportunity to practice technically and physically in an active skiing position.

After Ski Cool Down
After any strenuous physical activity it’s good to cool down and stretch out the muscle groups that have been worked out to ensure no stiffness or decreased range of movement in the future.

Pre-Ski Warm Up
Before skiing (or any sport) it’s essential to prepare your body for the sport it’s about to do. This is particularly important with skiing as we generally go from being cold and static to skiing at a high intensity and having to exert and stress our muscles to a high degree with no preparation in between.
